What Researchers Did
Researchers surveyed maxillofacial surgeons in the UK to investigate their attitudes towards the treatment and dental rehabilitation of oral cancer patients.
What They Found
The survey achieved a 65.5% response rate (150/229). Findings showed a decline in maxillary resections (62%) but an increase in maxillary defect reconstruction from 38% in 1995 to 91% in the present study. The use of implants for dental rehabilitation post-cancer surgery also significantly increased from 43% to 93%.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients undergoing oral cancer treatment might benefit from similar advancements in reconstructive techniques and increased use of dental implants for rehabilitation. This suggests a potential for improved quality of life and functional outcomes following surgery.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted in the UK and does not have a direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The study's findings are based on a survey of surgeons' attitudes in the UK, which may not be generalizable to other healthcare systems or reflect actual clinical practice.
