What Researchers Did
Researchers randomly assigned 20 migraine patients to receive either normobaric or hyperbaric oxygen during a headache attack to compare their effects on headache severity.
What They Found
Only 1 out of 10 patients (10%) in the normobaric oxygen group experienced significant headache relief, compared to 9 out of 10 patients (90%) in the hyperbaric oxygen group (P < .005). Furthermore, all 9 patients who did not respond to normobaric oxygen subsequently found significant relief when treated with hyperbaric oxygen.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients experiencing severe migraine headaches, hyperbaric oxygen therapy could potentially offer a rapid and effective treatment option to alleviate symptoms. This may provide an alternative for those who do not respond to conventional therapies, though further research is needed.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was not conducted in Canada, nor did it involve Canadian researchers or patients.
Study Limitations
A key limitation of this preliminary report is the small sample size of only 20 patients, which limits the generalizability of the findings.
