What Researchers Did
Researchers studied 18 healthy professional divers to see how a single hyperbaric exposure at 4 atmospheres absolute (ATA) affected their cardiovascular system and related biochemical markers.
What They Found
After a single 4 ATA hyperbaric exposure, participants showed a statistically significant increase in biochemical markers linked to cardiovascular health, although these remained within normal ranges. They also observed a decrease in heart rate, an increase in mean and diastolic blood pressure, and higher total peripheral resistance, along with increased parasympathetic nerve activity. These findings indicate that hyperbaric exposure can increase the heart's workload and reduce its activity for about an hour afterward.
Canadian Relevance

Study Limitations
The study's findings are limited by its small sample size of 18 healthy professional divers and its focus on the immediate effects of a single hyperbaric exposure.
