What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare hyperbaric oxygen therapy combined with medical therapy versus medical therapy alone for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
What They Found
They analyzed 19 studies involving 2401 patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss. The addition of hyperbaric oxygen therapy to medical therapy significantly improved complete hearing recovery (odds ratio 1.61, 95% CI 1.05-2.44) and any hearing recovery (odds ratio 1.43, 95% CI 1.20-1.67) compared to medical therapy alone. Patients receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy also experienced significantly greater absolute hearing gain.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing sudden sensorineural hearing loss may benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy in addition to standard medical treatment. This combined approach could lead to improved chances of complete or partial hearing recovery.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection or authors.
Study Limitations
The meta-analysis included a majority of nonrandomized studies, which may introduce bias and limit the overall strength of the evidence.
