What Researchers Did
This retrospective study investigated the effectiveness of adding intratympanic steroid or hyperbaric oxygen therapy to systemic steroid treatment for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
What They Found
Among 96 patients, there was no statistically significant difference in recovery or success rates between groups receiving systemic steroids alone, systemic steroids plus intratympanic steroids, or systemic steroids plus hyperbaric oxygen after initial treatment (P=0.66 and P=0.248, respectively). Salvage treatment yielded successful results in only 3 patients (5%).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing sudden idiopathic sensorineural hearing loss may not see additional benefit from adding intratympanic steroids or hyperbaric oxygen to standard systemic steroid treatment. This suggests that current initial treatment approaches might be sufficient without these adjunct therapies.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
As a retrospective study, it may be limited by its design and the relatively small sample size.
