What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively analyzed patient charts to evaluate the efficacy of adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen treatment for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
What They Found
Among 93 patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss, the average hearing gain after adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen treatment was 17.9 dB (p=0.001). A total of 46 patients (49.46%) showed an improvement in hearing, with males aged 40-59 years experiencing greater improvement, especially those with the poorest initial hearing.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss might consider discussing adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen treatment with their healthcare providers. This treatment could potentially offer a significant improvement in hearing, particularly for certain demographics.
Canadian Relevance
This study was not conducted in Canada and therefore has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
As a retrospective analysis of chart reviews, this study is subject to inherent limitations such as potential selection bias and lack of randomization.
