What Researchers Did
Researchers compared pressure chamber therapies (hyperbaric and alternobaric oxygenation) with conventional drug treatment in 45 Meniere's disease patients and 18 controls over a two-year follow-up period.
What They Found
Initially, there were no statistically significant differences in cochlear-vestibular symptom recovery among the three groups after 15 days of therapy. However, during the two-year follow-up, hyperbaric and especially alternobaric treatments provided significant control of vertigo attacks. Alternobaric oxygenation also resulted in more significant and persistent improvement in hearing loss compared to the other two groups.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with Meniere's disease might benefit from exploring pressure chamber therapies, particularly alternobaric oxygenation, as a potential treatment option. These therapies could offer improved control over vertigo attacks and more persistent hearing improvement compared to conventional drug treatments.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was not conducted in Canada, nor did it involve Canadian researchers or participants.
Study Limitations
A limitation of this study is the relatively small sample size across the treatment and control groups, which may affect the generalizability of the findings.
