Researchers compared two treatments for noise-induced hearing loss: steroid injection alone versus steroid injection combined with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

This retrospective study reviewed records of 220 patients with noise-induced hearing loss, with 158 receiving retroaural methylprednisolone injection combined with hyperbaric oxygen and 62 receiving the injection alone. Among patients with low-frequency, high-frequency, or flat descending type hearing loss, and among patients whose treatment began within 7 days of onset, the combined-treatment group had a significantly higher clinical effective rate than the injection-only group (p less than 0.05). Adverse reaction rates were 8.23% in the combined-treatment group and 9.68% in the injection-only group, a difference the study reports as not statistically significant (p greater than 0.05).
