What Researchers Did
Researchers in China compared outcomes in 220 patients with noise-induced hearing loss, where 158 received a combination of a steroid injection behind the ear plus HBOT, and 62 received the steroid injection alone.
What They Found
Across all hearing loss types, low-frequency, high-frequency, and flat, the combination group had a significantly higher rate of effective treatment than the steroid-only group (p < 0.05). The benefit was most pronounced in patients treated within 7 days of onset (p 0.05).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Noise-induced hearing loss is common in Canada among workers in industrial, construction, and military settings. This study shows that adding HBOT to steroid treatment significantly improves hearing recovery without increasing side effects, but only if treatment starts within the first week. Canadians experiencing sudden or acute hearing loss from noise exposure should seek immediate medical attention and ask about HBOT as an adjunct.
Canadian Relevance
No direct Canadian connection identified.
Study Limitations
This was a retrospective, non-randomized study at a single Chinese hospital, so patient selection differences between the two groups may have influenced the results.
