What Researchers Did
Researchers analyzed medical records of 218 patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) to assess the impact of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) duration and treatment delay on hearing outcomes.
What They Found
A statistically significant hearing improvement was observed at most frequencies when patients underwent more than 15 cycles of HBOT. Conversely, hearing improvement was statistically insignificant at 1500, 3000, and 4000 Hz for patients who started treatment with a delay of more than 10 days.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing sudden sensorineural hearing loss should seek hyperbaric oxygen therapy promptly, ideally within 10 days of symptom onset. Completing more than 15 cycles of HBOT may also lead to better hearing improvement.
Canadian Relevance
This study was not conducted in Canada and does not have a direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The study's retrospective design, analyzing existing medical records, may limit the generalizability of its findings.
