What Researchers Did
Researchers used national databases from Statistics Denmark to identify individuals who suffered from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning between 1995 and 2015, analyzing the extent of intoxication, mortality, and associated factors.
What They Found
From 1995 to 2015, 22,930 patients in Denmark experienced CO poisoning, with 92% requiring hospitalization. A total of 2,102 patients (9.2%) died within 30 days, and 98.0% of deaths from CO-containing gases were intentional. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy did not significantly improve survival after 30 days compared to no treatment, after adjusting for comorbidities.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This study highlights the significant mortality associated with CO poisoning and the high proportion of intentional deaths from CO-containing gases. Canadian patients should be aware of CO poisoning risks, especially from faulty appliances or intentional exposure, and seek immediate medical attention if suspected.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted in Denmark and has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
As a retrospective database study, it may be limited by the accuracy and completeness of recorded data and its findings are specific to the Danish population.
