What Researchers Did
Researchers reviewed medical records from 1997 to 2017 to understand the outcomes and complications of carinal resection surgery at their institution.
What They Found
Out of 45 carinal resections, 5 patients experienced anastomotic complications, with one patient receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Overall, 26 patients (58%) had postoperative events such as pneumonia or atrial arrhythmias. The 30-day and 90-day operative mortality rates were 6.8% and 7%, respectively.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This study highlights the challenges and potential complications associated with carinal resection surgery for lung neoplasms. While HBOT was used in one case for an anastomotic complication, its specific role and effectiveness in this context would need further investigation. Patients undergoing such complex surgeries should be aware of the potential for postoperative complications.
Canadian Relevance
No direct Canadian connection identified.
Study Limitations
This study was a retrospective review from a single institution, which may limit the generalizability of its findings to other surgical centers.
