What Researchers Did
This retrospective study analyzed 10 patients with acute hydrogen sulfide poisoning admitted to a hospital in Zhoushan between August and September 2023.
What They Found
Among 10 patients, 4 had severe, 3 had moderate, and 3 had mild poisoning, stemming from incidents in fishing cabins (6 patients) and sewer maintenance (4 patients). Four severe patients experienced corneal chemical injuries, and 7 patients showed bilateral infiltrative changes on chest CT scans. All severe cases had elevated lactate and low oxygenation, with one fatality among the 10 patients.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients, particularly those in occupations with potential H2S exposure like fishing or sanitation, should be aware of the risks and symptoms of acute poisoning. Prompt medical attention and early airway management in severe cases are critical for improving outcomes.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted in Zhoushan, China.
Study Limitations
The study's retrospective design and small sample size of 10 cases limit the generalizability of its findings.
