What Researchers Did
Researchers compared the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen comprehensive therapy versus simple hyperbaric oxygen treatment in 220 construction workers with noise-induced deafness.
What They Found
The comprehensive therapy group showed a higher cure rate of 53.6% compared to 38.2% in the simple hyperbaric oxygen group. The total effective rate was also significantly higher for comprehensive therapy at 79.1% versus 67.3%, and improved further with more treatment courses, reaching 60.9% cure rate and 84.5% total effective rate after four courses.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients experiencing noise-induced deafness, comprehensive hyperbaric oxygen therapy may offer a more effective treatment option than hyperbaric oxygen alone. This approach could lead to better hearing improvement and overall treatment success, especially with extended courses.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted outside of Canada and does not have a direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The study was conducted at a single hospital with a specific population of construction workers, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
