What Researchers Did
This retrospective study evaluated the clinical features and correlation of hearing outcomes after first and recurrent episodes of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) in 30 patients.
What They Found
The median age at the first and second ISSNHL episodes was 48 and 53.5 years, respectively, with vertigo present in 30% of first episodes and 40% of second episodes. Complete hearing recovery rates were 46.67% after the first episode and 33.33% after the second episode, and a significant positive correlation (r = 0.721, p < 0.001) was found between treatment outcomes of the first and second episodes.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing recurrent idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss may find that their hearing recovery after a subsequent episode is related to their recovery from the initial episode. This suggests that the outcome of the first episode could offer an indication of potential recovery in future recurrences.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was not conducted in Canada, nor does it involve Canadian researchers or patients.
Study Limitations
Limitations include the retrospective design and the small sample size of 30 patients, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
