What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a randomized study with 171 patients to compare the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, oral steroids, and their combination for sudden sensorineural hearing loss, assessing hearing at baseline and 20 days post-treatment.
What They Found
Both hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and combination therapy (HBOT + oral steroids) significantly improved auditory function (p 14 days). Profound SSNHL recovered equally with both, but upsloping SSNHL responded better to HBOT, and downsloping or flat SSNHL improved most with combination therapy (all p < 0.05).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing sudden sensorineural hearing loss may benefit from a personalized treatment approach, considering both the timing of symptom onset and the specific audiogram pattern. For instance, early treatment might favor hyperbaric oxygen therapy alone, while combination therapy with oral steroids could be more effective for delayed presentations or certain types of hearing loss.
Canadian Relevance
This study was not conducted in Canada and does not have a direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The study's findings may be limited by its specific patient population and the relatively short follow-up period of 20 days.
