What Researchers Did
Researchers studied 77 men under 60 years old with stable angina, comparing drug therapy alone to drug therapy combined with either hyperbaric oxygenation (HBOT) or hemosorption.
What They Found
All three patient groups experienced a reduction in the frequency of resting and exercise anginal attacks. However, only the group receiving drug therapy combined with hemosorption showed increased exercise tolerance and a significant fall in total and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. The study concluded that hyperbaric oxygenation and hemosorption did not significantly improve the degree of stable angina beyond the effects of drug therapy.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This study suggests that HBOT may not be an effective add-on treatment for stable angina in Canadian patients. Individuals with stable angina should continue to follow standard drug therapy as prescribed by their healthcare providers.
Canadian Relevance
No direct Canadian connection identified.
Study Limitations
This study was conducted in 1991, and the abstract does not specify the hyperbaric oxygenation protocols used, which may limit the applicability of its findings to current practices.
