What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy for pathological scars.
What They Found
Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy significantly reduced the recurrence rate of pathological scars after surgery and radiotherapy (OR = 0.26, 95% CI: 0.13-0.52, p = 0.0001). Patients receiving HBO also reported higher satisfaction (OR = 4.45, 95% CI: 1.49-13.30, p = 0.007) and showed significant improvement in Vancouver Scar Scale scores (SMD: -3.82, 95% CI: -6.07 to -0.49, p = 0.02).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients with pathological scars, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may offer a new treatment option to reduce recurrence and improve scar appearance and patient satisfaction. This could potentially lead to better long-term outcomes and quality of life for those affected by severe scarring.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The meta-analysis was limited by the small number of included studies (four) and their heterogeneous designs, including only one randomized controlled trial.
