What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a retrospective chart review to assess if early treatment response to hyperbaric oxygen therapy predicts outcomes in patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
What They Found
Of 39 patients, 53.8% experienced very substantial hearing improvement (≥20 dB) and 20.5% had substantial improvement (10-19 dB) at treatment completion. A negative early treatment response, defined as less than a 10 dB increase in pure tone average after the first week, was the only significant predictor of treatment failure (odds ratio 6.98, p=0.010).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy for sudden sensorineural hearing loss might benefit from early assessment of treatment response. If there is minimal improvement after the first week, clinicians could consider adjusting the treatment plan or exploring alternative therapies.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was not conducted in Canada nor involved Canadian participants or institutions.
Study Limitations
As a retrospective chart review, this study is limited by its design, which may introduce selection bias and reliance on existing data.
