What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a retrospective study comparing combined hyperbaric oxygen and corticosteroid therapy to corticosteroid monotherapy in military personnel with acute acoustic trauma.
What They Found
They found that combined therapy led to significantly better absolute hearing improvements at 500 Hz (p=0.014), 3000 Hz (p=0.023), 4000 Hz (p=0.001), and 6000 Hz (p=0.01), and at the mean of all frequencies (p=0.002). Relative improvements were also significant at 4000 Hz (p=0.046) and 6000 Hz (p=0.013), with a higher percentage of patients in the HBO group recovering to a functional level.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing acute acoustic trauma might benefit from early combination therapy involving hyperbaric oxygen and corticosteroids. This approach could lead to better hearing recovery, especially at higher frequencies, and improved functional outcomes.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted on military personnel in the Netherlands, and therefore has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
As a retrospective study, this research is limited by potential selection bias and confounding factors inherent in its design.
