What Researchers Did
Researchers prospectively studied 80 patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss, comparing 55 who received hyperbaric oxygen and medical treatment to 25 who received medical treatment alone.
What They Found
They found a statistically significant difference in hearing gain and degree of hearing loss after treatment between the group receiving hyperbaric oxygen plus medical treatment and the group receiving medical treatment only (p<.05). Patients with tinnitus in the hyperbaric oxygen and medical treatment group showed the highest hearing improvement, with average hearing gain on each audiometric frequency being better than in the medical treatment group (p<.05).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing sudden sensorineural hearing loss may benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy in addition to standard medical treatment. This approach could be particularly effective for individuals who also present with tinnitus, potentially leading to greater hearing improvement.
Canadian Relevance
This study was not conducted in Canada and therefore has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The study's findings may be limited by its relatively small sample size and single-center design, potentially affecting the generalizability of the results.
