What Researchers Did
The researchers compared hearing outcomes in patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss who received hyperbaric oxygen therapy plus medical treatment versus medical treatment alone.
What They Found
Among 37 patients receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy plus medical treatment, 24 (60%) experienced at least 10 decibels improvement in pure tone average. In comparison, 13 (76.4%) of 17 patients receiving medical treatment only achieved the same improvement. This study did not find a trend favoring hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss may not see additional benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy when combined with standard medical treatment. This suggests that current medical treatments alone could be sufficient for many patients.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
A limitation of this study is its relatively small sample size, which may have impacted its ability to detect a significant benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
