What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated if combining intra-articular injections of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) with hyperbaric oxygenation treatment (HBO) could improve osteoarthritis in a rat knee joint model.
What They Found
The combined treatment of ADMSCs and HBO significantly improved cartilage regeneration in the knee joint. Radiographic scores for knee joint damage were significantly decreased in both the HBO+ADS21day and HBO+ADS28day groups compared to the osteoarthritis group. The positive effect was greater in the HBO+ADS28day group, which showed relatively normal articular cartilage, while the HBO+ADS21day group still had moderate degeneration.
Canadian Relevance
No direct Canadian connection identified. Osteoarthritis is not a Health Canada-recognized indication for hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Study Limitations
A key limitation is that this study was conducted on rats, meaning the results may not directly translate to human osteoarthritis.
