What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively examined patient files from 2004 to 2010 to compare the efficacy of oral steroid, intratympanic steroid, hyperbaric oxygen, and combination therapies for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
What They Found
Among 217 patients, the oral steroid plus hyperbaric oxygen group showed the highest response rate at 86.88% (53/61) and complete recovery rate at 42.6% (26/61). This combination also achieved the highest mean hearing gain, significantly outperforming oral steroid (63.79% response), intratympanic steroid (46.51% response), and hyperbaric oxygen alone (43.85% response).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss may experience better outcomes with a combined treatment of oral steroids and hyperbaric oxygen. This approach appears more effective for both overall response and complete hearing recovery than individual therapies.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted in another country.
Study Limitations
A limitation of this study is its retrospective design, which may introduce biases and limit the generalizability of the findings.
