What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively compared the efficacy of intratympanic steroid administration with hyperbaric oxygen therapy in 276 patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
What They Found
The intratympanic steroid group showed a significantly higher recovery rate (79.4%) compared to the hyperbaric oxygen group (68.4%, P = .048). Patients receiving intratympanic steroids were also more than twice as likely to recover (odds ratio: 2.045). Other hearing outcomes, such as cure rate and marked-recovery rate, did not differ significantly between the groups.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss might experience better hearing recovery with intratympanic steroid injections compared to hyperbaric oxygen therapy. This suggests that intratympanic steroids could be a more effective treatment option for improving hearing outcomes.

Study Limitations
A key limitation of this study is its retrospective design, which may introduce selection bias and limit the ability to establish causality.
