What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively evaluated the records of 67 patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) to assess the additional effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) when combined with systemic steroid and prostaglandin E.
What They Found
Patients receiving triple therapy (HBO plus systemic steroid and prostaglandin E) showed significantly greater hearing improvement (p < 0.01) compared to those without HBO. Multivariate analysis confirmed a significant positive correlation between pure tone audiometry improvement and HBO, with an odds ratio of 7.42 (95% CI 2.37-23.3; p = 0.001).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) may see improved hearing outcomes if hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) is added to their standard treatment. This suggests that healthcare providers could consider HBO as a beneficial adjunctive therapy for these patients.
Canadian Relevance
This study was not conducted in Canada and therefore has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
As a retrospective study, it is subject to inherent limitations such as potential selection bias and unmeasured confounding factors, despite adjustments.
