What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively reviewed the treatment and follow-up of 18 patients diagnosed with transient osteoporosis of the hip (TOH) over a three-year period.
What They Found
The study included 6 females (average age 34.3 years) and 12 males (average age 40.7 years) with TOH. All patients showed clinical and radiological improvements, and none developed avascular necrosis or complications. Harris Hip Scores significantly improved from 55.6 before treatment to 88.8 at 3 months and 96.0 at 6 months.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This research suggests that conservative treatments, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy, can effectively manage transient osteoporosis of the hip. Canadian patients with TOH might find similar treatment plans helpful for improving hip function and reducing pain. The study also indicates HBOT could be a safe option, even for breastfeeding mothers.
Canadian Relevance
No direct Canadian connection identified.
Study Limitations
This was a retrospective study with a small sample size of 18 patients, which limits the generalizability of the findings.
