What Researchers Did
Researchers used a nationwide Japanese inpatient database and propensity score-matching to compare outcomes in adult carbon monoxide poisoning patients who received hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) versus those who did not.
What They Found
In-hospital mortality was not significantly different between the HBOT group (0.8%) and the control group (1.2%). However, patients receiving HBOT had significantly lower rates of depressed mental status and reduced activities of daily living at discharge. These benefits were also observed in patients with non-severe poisoning.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with carbon monoxide poisoning might experience improved functional recovery and mental status if treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. While it may not reduce the risk of death, it could enhance their quality of life post-poisoning.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted using a Japanese nationwide database and has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
As an observational study, it cannot establish causality and may be subject to unmeasured confounding factors.
