What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively reviewed clinical data from 167 patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) who did not respond to systemic steroids and subsequently received adjuvant hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).
What They Found
After HBOT, 16 patients (9.6%) experienced complete recovery, 16 (9.6%) had definite improvement, and 45 (26.9%) showed slight improvement. The overall hearing improvement rate in the HBOT group was 46.1% (77/167 cases), which was significantly higher than the 32.5% (52/160 cases) observed in a control group (p = 0.021).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients experiencing idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss that does not respond to initial steroid treatment, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may offer a potential alternative for improving hearing outcomes. This could provide an additional treatment option for individuals who have exhausted standard therapies.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted in Japan.
Study Limitations
A key limitation of this study is its retrospective design, which may introduce selection bias and limit the generalizability of the findings.
