What Researchers Did
Researchers compared hearing recovery rates in 356 patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss who received hyperbaric oxygen therapy plus systemic steroids, systemic steroids alone, or systemic and intratympanic steroids.
What They Found
The overall hearing recovery rate was significantly higher for patients treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy and systemic steroids compared to those receiving systemic steroids alone (p < 0.001) or systemic and intratympanic steroids (p < 0.001). Additionally, the presence of vertigo negatively affected hearing recovery.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss might benefit from a combined treatment approach involving hyperbaric oxygen therapy alongside systemic steroids. This combination could potentially improve their chances of hearing recovery compared to steroid-only treatments.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted outside of Canada and does not have a direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The study's observational design, rather than a randomized controlled trial, may limit the definitive conclusions regarding causality.
