What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a randomized, single-center, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial to evaluate hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) versus hyperbaric air for chronic diabetic foot ulcers.
What They Found
Among 94 patients with chronic diabetic foot ulcers, complete healing at one year was significantly higher in the HBOT group (25/48, 52%) compared to the placebo group (12/42, 29%, P = 0.03). A sub-analysis of patients completing more than 35 sessions showed even greater healing rates for HBOT (61%) versus placebo (27%, P = 0.009).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with chronic diabetic foot ulcers may benefit from adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy to improve healing rates. This treatment could potentially reduce complications associated with non-healing ulcers, improving patient quality of life.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted in a single center outside of Canada.
Study Limitations
A limitation of this study is its single-center design, which may affect the generalizability of the findings to a broader patient population.
