What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a pilot case series in Japan to evaluate hyperbaric oxygen therapy in 11 patients with painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis resistant to conventional treatments.
What They Found
Seven of the 11 patients (64%) demonstrated persistent symptom improvement for 12 months after hyperbaric oxygen treatment. Responders experienced a decrease in pelvic pain scale from 7.7 ± 1.0 to 3.4 ± 2.5 and urgency scale from 6.6 ± 0.9 to 4.3 ± 2.4 after 12 months (p < 0.05). Adverse events included one case of transient eustachian tube dysfunction and three cases of reversible exudative otitis media.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients suffering from painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis that hasn't responded to standard treatments, hyperbaric oxygen therapy could potentially offer a new option for symptom relief. However, this treatment is not yet a standard approach and would require further validation before widespread adoption.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted in Japan and has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
This was a small pilot case series without a control group, limiting the generalizability and strength of the evidence.
