What Researchers Did
This prospective cohort study evaluated the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on functional recovery in postoperative spinal dural arterio-venous fistula (SDAVF) patients.
What They Found
At 24 months, the HBOT group showed significantly greater improvement in the modified Denis Pain and Numbness Scale (mDPNS) compared to the control group (2.25 vs 0.88; P=0.005). The HBOT group also experienced a decrease in the average length of hypersignal in magnetic resonance imaging T2 images at 3 months after surgery.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients undergoing surgery for spinal dural arterio-venous fistula might experience improved pain and numbness outcomes with the addition of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. This could potentially lead to better long-term functional recovery and quality of life after their procedure.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was not conducted in Canada, nor did it involve Canadian researchers or patients.
Study Limitations
The study was limited by its relatively small sample size of 33 patients and its observational cohort design, which may limit generalizability.
