What Researchers Did
Researchers prospectively studied 24 male patients undergoing posterior urethral reconstruction, comparing hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) to a control group for erectile function recovery using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) score.
What They Found
At 3 months post-surgery, the HBOT group demonstrated significantly higher total IIEF scores and scores in three domains (erectile function, overall satisfaction, and intercourse satisfaction) compared to the control group (P < 0.05). While both groups experienced a decrease in IIEF scores from preoperative baseline, HBOT was associated with significantly better erectile function recovery postoperatively.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients undergoing posterior urethral reconstruction might potentially benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy to improve erectile function recovery. This treatment could offer a practical option to enhance post-operative quality of life related to sexual health.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection or involvement.
Study Limitations
A significant limitation of this study is its small sample size of 24 patients and short 3-month follow-up period.
