Summary

What Researchers Did

Researchers treated eight patients with large vestibular aqueduct syndrome and acute sensorineural hearing loss, unresponsive to intravenous treatment, with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

What They Found

The mean hearing recovery after hyperbaric oxygen therapy was significantly higher at 20.8 +/- 12.1 dB compared to 2.3 +/- 7.2 dB after intravenous treatment (P < 0.01). Five of the eight patients experienced complete or partial hearing recovery after one course of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

What This Means for Canadian Patients

Canadian patients with large vestibular aqueduct syndrome experiencing acute sensorineural hearing loss that does not respond to conventional treatments might consider hyperbaric oxygen therapy. This treatment could offer a chance for hearing recovery when other options have failed.

Canadian Relevance

This study has no direct Canadian connection.

Study Limitations

A significant limitation of this study is its very small sample size of only eight patients.
