What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively reviewed the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy for postoperative paralytic ileus and adhesive intestinal obstruction in 626 patients who underwent abdominal surgery.
What They Found
The overall resolution rates for patients receiving HBO therapy were 92% for postoperative paralytic ileus and 85% for adhesive intestinal obstruction. Among patients over 75 years old, resolution rates were 97% (35 of 36 cases) for paralytic ileus and 81% (42 of 52 cases) for adhesive intestinal obstruction, with an overall mortality rate of 1.2%.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may offer a safe and non-invasive treatment option for Canadian patients experiencing postoperative paralytic ileus or adhesive intestinal obstruction after abdominal surgery. This therapy could be particularly beneficial for elderly patients, potentially aiding recovery and reducing complications.
Canadian Relevance
This retrospective study was not conducted in Canada and has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
As a retrospective review, this study is limited by its observational nature and lack of a control group, requiring further prospective assessment.
