What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively evaluated the effectiveness of combined vasodilatation infusion and hyperbaric oxygen therapy in 61 patients (62 ears) with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss treated in Prague between 2004 and 2007.
What They Found
Overall, 59.7% of patients experienced improvement in their hearing. Notably, 65.9% of patients who began hyperbaric oxygen therapy within 10 days of onset achieved complete recovery or significant improvement, whereas only 38.9% of those starting treatment after 10 days showed improvement.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss might benefit from combined hyperbaric oxygen therapy and vasodilatation, particularly if treatment is initiated promptly. Early intervention, ideally within 10 days of symptom onset, appears to be crucial for achieving better hearing outcomes.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted in Prague.
Study Limitations
As a retrospective study, it is limited by its design, lack of a control group, and relatively small sample size.
