What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively analyzed outcomes in 77 patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL) who received hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).
What They Found
Of 76 patients, 25 ears (33%) achieved complete resolution of deafness after HBOT, with an additional 31 ears (40%) showing significant improvement. Overall, 56 of 76 patients (74%) experienced complete or moderate improvement in hearing loss, with short delay to HBOT, younger age, and more severe initial hearing loss being predictive of better outcomes.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing sudden sensorineural hearing loss may benefit from prompt referral for hyperbaric oxygen therapy, especially if other treatments are ineffective. Timely treatment, ideally within 15 days, appears crucial for achieving the best possible hearing recovery.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was not conducted in Canada, nor does it involve Canadian researchers or patients.
Study Limitations
A key limitation of this study is its retrospective design, which may introduce biases and limit the generalizability of the findings.
