What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated if hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) combined with medical therapy improved hearing and altered serum IGF-1 and HSP70 levels in 100 patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL).
What They Found
The HBOT plus medical therapy group showed a significantly higher total effective rate of 70% compared to 46% in the medical therapy alone group (P < 0.05). Patients receiving HBOT also experienced a greater mean hearing gain of 23.9 ± 14.7 dB versus 12.5 ± 10.9 dB in the control group, alongside significantly higher increases in serum IGF-1 and HSP70 levels (P < 0.05).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients experiencing moderately severe to profound idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss, adding hyperbaric oxygen therapy to standard medical treatment could significantly improve hearing recovery. This combined approach may offer a more effective pathway to regain hearing, potentially by increasing beneficial serum factors like IGF-1 and HSP70.
Canadian Relevance
This study was not conducted in Canada and does not have a direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The study's findings are based on a specific patient population, and the long-term effects of HBOT require further investigation.
