What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a 15-year retrospective review of 329 pediatric patients who received hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) at two centers.
What They Found
Of 329 pediatric patients who underwent 3,164 HBOT exposures, 254 (77.2%) completed treatment as planned, and 218 (66.5%) achieved treatment goals without complications. Complications were rare, including neurological sequelae in two patients, one amputation, and five middle ear barotrauma events, with no central nervous system oxygen toxicity recorded.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This study indicates that hyperbaric oxygen treatment can be safely administered to pediatric patients with a low rate of complications when appropriate precautions are taken. This could offer a viable treatment option for Canadian children requiring HBOT for various conditions.
Canadian Relevance
This study was not conducted in Canada and therefore has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
As a retrospective review, this study is limited by its observational nature and potential for selection bias or incomplete data collection.
