What Researchers Did
Researchers assessed the efficacy of various treatments, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), and the impact of HBOT administration timing on hearing recovery in patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL).
What They Found
Overall, 15.2% of patients achieved complete recovery, 21.0% partial recovery, 42.0% slight recovery, and 22.0% no recovery. Among 79 patients with severe hearing loss, those treated within 2 weeks of onset showed better hearing outcomes. Specifically, for patients with an initial hearing threshold of less than 70 dB, initiating HBOT within 2 weeks was associated with statistically significantly higher hearing recovery rates.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing sudden sensorineural hearing loss may benefit from seeking treatment, particularly hyperbaric oxygen therapy, as early as possible. Initiating treatment within two weeks of symptom onset appears crucial for improving hearing recovery chances.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was not conducted in Canada or with Canadian participants.
Study Limitations
As an observational study, this research may be limited by potential confounding factors and the inability to establish definitive cause-and-effect relationships.
