What Researchers Did
Researchers measured DNA synthetic time (Ts), labeling index (LI), and potential doubling time (Tpot) in human urinary bladder carcinomas from 10 patients using an in vitro 3H-thymidine labeling technique.
What They Found
The labeling index (LI) varied from 3.7% to 18.0%, and potential doubling time (Tpot) ranged from 48 to 136 hours. Papillary carcinoma exhibited longer Tpot values compared to nonpapillary carcinoma. Patients with a higher LI and/or shorter Tpot showed a poor prognosis.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted in Japan and did not involve Canadian researchers or patients.
Study Limitations
A significant limitation of this study is the small sample size of only 10 patients and its in vitro nature, which may not fully reflect in vivo conditions.
