What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively compared the effectiveness of adding intratympanic steroids to a double combined therapy (intravenous steroids and hyperbaric oxygen) for severe idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
What They Found
Among 172 patients with severe idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss, researchers found a statistically significant improvement in hearing for patients with a pure-tone average (PTA) ≥ 90 dB (28 patients in the triple therapy group vs. 24 in the double therapy group) when intratympanic steroids were added. No significant difference was observed for patients with PTA between 60 and 89 dB (64 patients in triple therapy vs. 56 in double therapy).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients experiencing severe idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss, particularly those with very profound hearing loss (PTA ≥ 90 dB), adding intratympanic steroids to existing treatments may offer improved hearing outcomes. This could provide an additional therapeutic option for a challenging condition.
Canadian Relevance
This study was not conducted in Canada and does not have a direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
As a retrospective study with a historical control group, this research is subject to inherent biases and confounding factors.
