What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a prospective, randomized, single-blinded clinical trial to evaluate if hyperbaric oxygen preconditioning could protect the brain and heart in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery.
What They Found
Among 49 patients, those undergoing on-pump surgery who received hyperbaric oxygen preconditioning showed significant decreases in perioperative serum levels of S100B protein, neuron-specific enolase, and troponin I compared to the on-pump control group. This group also experienced a reduced length of intensive care unit stay and decreased use of inotropic drugs post-surgery, while no differences were observed in off-pump groups.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients undergoing on-pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery might potentially benefit from hyperbaric oxygen preconditioning to reduce brain and heart injury markers and shorten intensive care unit stays. However, this treatment may not offer similar benefits for those undergoing off-pump procedures.
Canadian Relevance
This study was not conducted in Canada and therefore has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The study was limited by its relatively small sample size of 49 patients and being single-blinded, which could impact generalizability.
