What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively analyzed 174 patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss to develop a regression model predicting hearing outcome.
What They Found
Significant correlations were observed between hearing improvement and patient's age, days from onset to treatment, and presence of vertigo, with partial correlation coefficients of -0.221, -0.324, and -0.329 respectively. The multiple regression model achieved a multiple correlation coefficient of 0.495 with a p value of 1.42 × 10(-9).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss may experience better hearing recovery if treatment is initiated sooner and if they are younger. The presence of vertigo at onset could also indicate a different recovery trajectory.
Canadian Relevance
This study did not include Canadian participants or data, therefore its direct Canadian relevance is not established.
Study Limitations
As a retrospective study, it is limited by potential selection bias and the specific treatment protocol used, which may not be generalizable.
