What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated prognostic factors for hearing outcomes and the role of oxidant-antioxidant equilibrium in sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) patients treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).
What They Found
Among 92 SSNHL patients, the overall recovery rate was significantly higher in those receiving combined HBOT and dexamethasone (51.4%) compared to those treated with steroids only (25.0%). Positive prognostic factors for HBOT-treated patients included hearing loss at low frequency, low initial hearing thresholds, and high levels of hemoglobin (HGB), hematocrit (HCT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss might experience better hearing recovery if hyperbaric oxygen therapy is added to steroid treatment. Early intervention and specific blood markers could help identify those most likely to benefit from this combined approach.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted in a different country.
Study Limitations
The study was conducted at a single center with a relatively small sample size, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
