What Researchers Did
Researchers reported on a 36-year-old woman with Takayasu's arteritis who experienced two episodes of sudden hearing loss in separate ears, 11 months apart.
What They Found
During the first episode, corticosteroid treatment led to temporary hearing improvement that deteriorated 14 days after therapy stopped. In the second episode, combining hyperbaric oxygen therapy with corticosteroids resulted in hearing improvements in both ears, including the ear previously unresponsive to corticosteroids alone.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients with Takayasu's arteritis experiencing sudden hearing loss, hyperbaric oxygen therapy combined with corticosteroids might be a beneficial treatment option. This approach could potentially offer improved hearing restoration, especially in cases where corticosteroids alone have been ineffective.
Canadian Relevance

Study Limitations
As a single case report, the findings cannot be generalized to a broader patient population.
