What Researchers Did
Researchers studied the root and canal shapes of 700 Indian maxillary premolar teeth using a special staining and clearing technique involving a hyperbaric oxygen chamber at 0.6 MPa for 2 hours.
What They Found
They found that most first premolars had two separate roots, a common Caucasian trait, while most second premolars had a single root, a common Mongoloid trait. Other variations, including single-rooted first premolars and three-rooted first and second premolars, were also identified, with a "radiculous" first premolar found in two samples. The study concluded that Indian maxillary premolars show a mix of both Mongolian and Caucasian root and canal characteristics.

Study Limitations
This study was conducted on extracted teeth in a laboratory setting, meaning its findings on tooth morphology may not fully represent the complex conditions within a living patient's mouth.
