What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated serum erythropoietin levels in 16 healthy volunteers after breathing 100% normobaric oxygen for 2 hours and 100% hyperbaric oxygen at 2.5 ATA for 90 minutes.
What They Found
They found a significant 60% increase (P < 0.001) in serum erythropoietin 36 hours after normobaric oxygen exposure. Conversely, a 53% decrease in serum erythropoietin was observed 24 hours after hyperbaric oxygen breathing.

Study Limitations
The study's findings are based on a small sample of healthy volunteers, which may limit generalizability to diverse patient populations.
