What Researchers Did
Researchers described the case of a 23-year-old male with severe methaemoglobinaemia treated with toluidine-blue and adjunctive hyperbaric oxygenation.
What They Found
The patient presented with severe methaemoglobinaemia of 68% after consuming nitrites and ethanol. Following initial treatment with toluidine-blue and subsequent hyperbaric oxygenation, the patient recovered uneventfully and was discharged three days later.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This case suggests that hyperbaric oxygenation could be a valuable supportive therapy for Canadian patients experiencing severe methaemoglobinaemia. It may help achieve rapid tissue re-oxygenation and reduce recovery time in such critical situations.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted outside of Canada.
Study Limitations
As a single case report, the findings are limited in their generalizability to a broader patient population.
