What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a case-control study at a tertiary care academic center to compare the characteristics and treatment response of 26 patients with simultaneous bilateral sudden hearing loss to 106 patients with unilateral sudden hearing loss, all treated with systemic steroids and hyperbaric oxygen.
What They Found
They found that patients with bilateral sudden hearing loss were significantly younger (mean age 24.5 years) than those with unilateral sudden hearing loss (mean age 42.0 years, p<0.001), and immune response markers were more common in bilateral cases. Pre-treatment hearing thresholds were similar between groups, but post-treatment average hearing thresholds were 47.0dB for unilateral cases and 55.4dB (left) and 59.0dB (right) for bilateral cases.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing sudden hearing loss, especially bilateral, might be younger and could benefit from early investigation for immune markers. This information could help clinicians in Canada to better diagnose and manage simultaneous bilateral sudden hearing loss, potentially leading to more targeted treatment approaches.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted in a tertiary care academic center outside of Canada.
Study Limitations
The study's case-control design and the relatively small sample size of patients with bilateral sudden hearing loss (26 patients) are potential limitations.
